Kay (Cookie) Cartwright
Bio
Katheriine "Kay" or , in sports, "Cookie" Cartwright
Born in Kingston, and brought up in the words of Cartwright's Point, just east of Fort Henry, she practised law in Kingston for 30 years, for the first twenty with her father. She is better known around Kingston for here participation in sports, particulary hockey and golf.
Family camping trips, first to Algonguin Park in the '40's, and later farther north, to attempt to escape the effects of civilization, have instilled a deep love of the Canadian landscape in her, which she is trying to express and bring to more Canadians. Canoe trips down the Nahanni, the Thelon and the Burnside Rivers as well as several Arctic cruises have opened new vistas.
After retiring in 1996, Kay was encouraged to take up artistic pursuits by her neighbour, Don McCallum, Kingston's own "renaissance man" who played in several bands, and painted for over 70 years. Beginning as a "Monday painter", she now belongs to V.A.G.A., the Bath Artisians, and the E.C.O.A.A., and has taken workshops from Henry Vyfinkel, Shirley Miller, and Gordon Mackenzie.
She exhibits at the Seniors' Centre, with V.A.G.A., in Gananoque, and at Algonquin Park in the annual "Mystery of the Park" show every October.
